GE Healthcare is accelerating the transformation of healthcare with Edison - but we can't do it alone. We strongly believe in the power of a collaborative ecosystem.

We intend to nurture the start-up ecosystem and work with them to create healthcare solutions leveraging the Edison platform and decades of GE Healthcare’s expertise - solutions that will improve patient outcomes and experience, efficiency of clinical practice and that of the healthcare facilities, reduce waste and inefficiencies, and eliminate costly and harmful errors.

The program will harness the brainpower and energy of startups and allow them to use the building blocks of the Edison platform to deliver solutions that address quality and affordable healthcare for customers globally.

What is Edison ?

Edison is an advanced intelligence offering used by GE Healthcare’s internal developers and strategic partners to develop new healthcare applications, services, and AI algorithms. It comprises of applications, smart devices, and the Edison platform. Over the next few years, we expect Edison to become central to the healthcare ecosystem and an important hub for healthcare innovation with thousands of applications and services available on it.

Who can apply?

Any startup based out of India, having their core development activity/team in India can apply for Edison[X]. Companies working in the healthcare space, working on customer solutions are preferred. However, companies who are interested to build solution in healthcare space are also invited. Startups leveraging advanced technologies like cloud, Internet of Things, big data and advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, image and time series processing, edge computing, etc. will have an advantage.

What is the program?

Edison[X] is GE Healthcare’s global start-up collaboration program. It allows start-ups to learn from the Healthcare and Information Technology expertise for which GE Healthcare is well known and thus enhance the value proposition of their business ideas.

What is the problem statement that GEHC is asking startups to solve?

The program is focused on GE working with startups developing solutions that help healthcare providers deliver precision health for end-consumers. We are looking across the healthcare continuum in terms of preventive healthcare, precision diagnosis and treatment in a timely and affordable manner, improving workflows keeping patient at the core and the clinicians, technicians, radiologists and IT support as the surrounding ecosystem. We are also looking to get feedback on the Edison platform – including its services, functional capabilities, portal and APIs – with the aim of improving its effectiveness for internal and external consumption. Further, we are looking at start-ups that can help GEHC improve and expand its own product portfolio of medical devices. These could include elements like preventive maintenance, product training and monitoring, and supply chain among other things.

What are the outcomes GEHC is looking to drive through this program?

Core intent of the program is to nurture the startup ecosystem and work with them to create healthcare solutions leveraging the Edison platform and decades of GE Healthcare’s expertise – solutions that will improve patient outcomes, improve clinical efficiency and that of the healthcare facilities, reduce waste and inefficiencies, and eliminate costly and harmful errors. There are several possible outcomes of the program:

  • Co-creation and joint development
  • Joint go-to-market
  • Vendor/licensing agreements
  • Could eventually lead to revenue generating opportunities for the start-ups who will engage with us in this program

The six-month program provides an opportunity to not only develop your business but also identify what these opportunities with GE Healthcare could be.

Who can apply for the program?

Any startup based out of India, having their core development activity/team in India can apply for Edison[X]. Companies working in the healthcare space, working on customer solutions are preferred. However, companies who are interested to build solution in healthcare space are also invited. Startups leveraging advanced technologies like cloud, Internet of Things, big data and advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, image and time-series processing, edge computing, etc. will have an advantage.

What is the selection process?

Startups can apply online. The applications are evaluated via a three-stage screening process. Shortlisted applicants are invited for a final face-to-face pitch session with GE Healthcare leadership. The final selection is based on the strength of the business idea/plan, maturity and the closeness to productize their solution, team capabilities and relevance to the focus areas.

What are the selection criteria?

Startups should have an innovative and scalable idea coupled with a great team known for execution excellence. The more the idea is relevant to the program focus areas, the better.

What are the key dates/ timeline for this program?

  1. 08th June, 2020 – official launch of program

How long is this program?

The cohort will cover a period of six months. The program will provide startups with an opportunity to develop their solution and identify how GE Healthcare might help take these opportunities to market.

How many startups will be there in a cohort?

There will be 6 startups in the cohort.

What is the composition of the evaluation panel?

The evaluation panel will comprise a technologist and a business leader from different businesses across GEHC + leading investors who can help identify the investment ability aspect of the startup’s solution. Product managers’ input is key to this effort.

What will the startups receive after being accepted in the program?

Core value proposition of the program is to help startups scale their applications and start generating revenue through GE Healthcare’s Edison platform. To make this possible,

  • Startups will be assisted in problem validation, solution validation and eventual deployment
  • Startups will have access to deep domain expertise
  • Access to Edison platform [large training datasets, marketplace and multiple deployment endpoints from edge to cloud (this capability will be restricted to only certain integration pattern – which may or may not be applicable to a given start-up)]
  • Structured curriculum to strengthen 1st principles
  • A zero-equity cash grant to cover basic costs during the program.

We provide a combination of data, technology and market access to start-ups including:

What type of funding will GE Healthcare provide – Grant, Equity stake etc.? Will it be a one-time funding or staggered over a period?

Program provides a zero-equity cash-in-grant of USD 10,000 to every start-up. In addition, startups will get access to various mentorship, skill development, platform, commercial guidance, regulation guidance, data provision as additional benefits. GE Healthcare will have the right of first refusal to participate in equity fundraise or M&A opportunity being considered by the start-ups.

What kind of mentoring do startups receive?

Program provides access to technology and business mentors. Each start-up has assigned technology and business mentors who share their expertise and connections within the organization and the ecosystem. Start-ups have access to various GEH learning modules, specific training, and industry insights.

How do Startups benefit from it?

The Program provides a unique opportunity for start-ups to learn from a major global corporation. This program is a platform to partner with an industry leader and learn from its experience with staying ahead of the innovation curve and scaling a business quickly to its full potential. The learning cohort enters a six-month program in which start-ups are mentored by GEH technology and business experts, entrepreneurs, investors, and other industry leaders. Start-ups will learn to understand their customer’s needs and how to apply relevant frameworks for their business. Start-ups will also gain access to coworking space, tools, platforms, investors, financial grants, technology support, and business advisory services.

Where will the startups be based? Will they have to be based in Bangalore or travel to Bangalore to participate?

Program is open to any startup with core product development team in India. Startups will have freedom to leverage their own workspace. However, they are expected to visit the GEHC campus in Whitefield, Bangalore for certain workshops and interactions with mentors from time-to-time.

How is start-up's IP protected?

Startups have sole ownership of their existing IP as well as any IP that they develop during the program. If GE Healthcare chooses to engage in a deeper partnership with a startup, the two parties can get into a separate MoU to handle IP sharing in a way that it is mutually beneficial to both.

Who will be responsible for clinical testing, validation of the applications being developed?

The ownership of getting the solution clinically validated, tested etc. will rest with the startups. GE Healthcare will provide the support required to perform clinical testing and validation of the application, including access to data to test their solutions.

Who will be responsible for regulatory approvals of the applications in different markets?

The startup will be responsible for seeking regulatory approvals across different markets. However, with its decades of understanding across markets will support the startups with knowhow and other support in this process.

Who will be responsible to address medico-legal and other issues that may arise in the solution post its launch/ deployment?

Deployment on the Edison platform will be governed by the platforms’ terms and conditions. All partners, including start-ups, are expected to adhere to platform’s quality requirements. Having said that, issues arising out of the solution/application will have to be addressed by the startup. GE reserves the right to withdraw the solution from the Edison platform until the issue is satisfactorily resolved.

Will the applications developed by the startups be only available in the Edison platform (is it exclusive to GEHC) or can the startups also make it available to customers on their own?

Participation in the program doesn’t translate into exclusivity with GE Healthcare. Our intent is to create a vibrant ecosystem of precision healthcare startups to make better and affordable healthcare possible for all. Startups can offer the solutions to their own customers. We will look at it on a case-to-case basis with GE Healthcare retaining the right of first refusal with respect to an investment or exit opportunity for startup.

Can start-ups aspire to access global markets through this program?

Yes, applications developed as part of this program will be made available to GE Healthcare’s global customer base. While regulatory requirements vary based on country/region, our intent is to support startups in understanding those regulatory frameworks and tap into global markets.

How will GEHC and startups monetize the solution. Is there a royalty that GEHC will earn?

It depends on the impact and applicability of the solution on a case-to-case basis. It is too early to comment on that aspect.

Will the application be branded as GEHC application or of the startup?

It depends on how the application will be commercialized. It is too early to comment on that aspect.

Will the startups get a chance to work with existing GEHC partners of the Edison program? If yes, in what capacity?

Yes, there is a possibility of GEHC partners engaging with start-ups. This is envisaged broadly in two categories – solution validation and market access. We will facilitate this on a case to case basis depending on the need.

Will GE support these startups in their fund-raising exercise?

The ownership of fundraise lies with the startup. Program will assist startups with best practices in driving an efficient fundraise process and will support with warm introductions with investor community.

What happens after the program?

The graduating startups are enrolled in the Edison[X] alumni network and will continue to execute on identified pathways with GE Healthcare. Program will continue to provide operational support to start-ups as they engage more deeply with GE Healthcare.

Will logistical support, like travel and accommodation, be provided?

No. Startups need to make their own lodging and travel arrangements.

What time commitment is required from the Start-ups?

Although the time commitment might vary, teams should also attend the fortnightly review sessions, technology and business mentoring sessions, expert interactions, and other program activities.

Do startups need to pay any fees to join the program?

There is no cost to you, except travel and living expenses. We see the 24-week program as an opportunity to learn more about your company, help you validate key assumptions and identify opportunities for further collaboration.

Can the startups/companies compete will each other wrt the product/solution they will develop or even with existing GE Healthcare products and services?

A key criterion of the selection process is to avoid any conflict with GEHC products or within startups in the cohort. This will be decided by the evaluation panel. If two startups submit competing ideas, the best solution proposed among them will be selected. We will look to avoid conflicts.

What are the outcomes of the Program?

There are several possible outcomes of the program, we are looking for collaboration opportunities with early-stage startups and recognize that this could take many forms; be it an investment, co-creation and joint development, go-to-market or even licensing agreements. The six-month program provides an opportunity to not only develop your business but also identify what these opportunities with GE Healthcare could be.
